Thoughts on Alcohol

November 30, 2014
Guys, I'm planning a Twelve Days of Christmas recipe stint for the days leading up to Christmas. This'll be a recipe a day, and maybe someone will find inspiration for their holiday meal!

Planning the recipes got me thinking about a couple things. I used to make cranberry liqueur to give away as Christmas gifts, but haven't now for the past couple of years. I stopped mostly because of the cost of buying booze as opposed to giving a cheaper gift like baking. For this 12 days thing, though, I had been thinking about including that recipe. I've decided against it because this is a blog about health, and consuming healthy foods, and alcohol doesn't really fit into that.

I don't drink. I drank a lot at the start of high school, but largely stopped when I was about sixteen. I can't remember why. Alcohol is a depressant, so not great for people with depression. It can also mess with your meds if you take any. I know that alcohol reduces the effectiveness of St. John's Wort. It's also really high in sugar, so if you're trying to avoid sugar in your diet, you probably shouldn't drink. I know it's particularly hard at the holidays not to drink socially, but I can say from experience that you get used to it, and people can't tell if that drink you're holding is water or vodka. Ha. Trick em all and wake up without a headache tomorrow. Your body will thank you.

I don't want to preach at you or anything like that. It's up to you whether you want to consume alcohol or not. I've definitely felt better since I stopped drinking.
