Body Image (NSFW)

December 05, 2014
Heads up, this article includes a semi-nude photo. Not of me!

Let's talk about body image. Graham showed me this article a while ago when I was talking about how being flat chested makes me feel unattractive or not feminine a lot of the time. I've been debating whether to write about it or not, but I think it's important. It talks about Keira Knightley's recent topless photo shoot for Interview magazine. She wanted to show what she looks like without being edited, and it's great. She has a body that doesn't fit into the current idea of femininity and it's nice to see an image of a woman that isn't sexualized.

I love Keira Knightley. She's a talented actor, but you know what? I like her because I look like that. I've always been skinny and I don't have boobs. I don't want to make this into an "ooh, I'm skinny, feel sorry for me" bullshit post. I'm generally pretty happy about being small, and I'm not going to complain about something a lot of people want. Small breasts, however, are pretty generally disliked no matter what size a woman is.

My close friend Traci, who is outrageously beautiful (and smart, funny, kind, skilled…), has the same problem. We both focus on that thing that we don't like about ourselves and don't notice all the things we do like. For example, I hate my flat chestedness but I'm healthy. Traci thinks she's too big but last time I saw her, she was talking about how strong she is right now (she's a carpenter). It's more important to be strong than super skinny.

The focus should be on health, not appearance. If you're eating well and exercising regularly, you'll feel good, and you'll probably look pretty damn good too. And honestly, there are way more important things than looking a certain way. Think of your internal organs, poor things. No one talks about them. Keep that in mind next time you look in the mirror. Be proud of your strong arms, or healthy hair, or, why not, cavity free teeth. Your teeth will be a lot more important than your boobs a few years down the road. You know your boobs will droop eventually, but your teeth don't have to fall out. Wink.
