Valentine's Day Menu Ideas

February 13, 2015
Valentine's Day is on the horizon. I'm not a huge fan of it. Graham and I exchange little (often poorly drawn on my part) hand drawn cards and that's about the extent of our celebrations. I mean, if he wanted to get some flowers, I'd be down for that, but I don't expect him to. Like every other holiday, I rely on food gifts. I'm planning on making waffles for us tomorrow morning, and there are a bunch of other recipe-testing treats around the house right now. I'll probably end up making some black bean burgers tomorrow too, because they're Graham's favourite. Burgers all the time. I think that boy would live on bean burgers.

So if you're looking for some recipe inspiration for tomorrow, I've got you covered. Listed below are some appetizers, entrees, breakfasts, and desserts. Food gifts? Most of the recipes here are vegan, many are gluten free, and all are healthy, vegetarian, and always free of refined sugar. Because you do not need a sugar crash during your romantic morning/day/evening with your partner, or your cat. If you don't have a date for Valentine's, who needs one, make some stuff for yourself. The less sharing the better, amirite?

These are just suggestions, but you can find more ideas in my recipe index.

Starting with breakfast:

Comforting Banana Bread (Vegan, Low-fat) - warm and cozy if you're going to have a -30C day like we are.

German Buckwheat Pancakes (gluten-free, dairy-free)

Spelt Bean No-Knead Bread (vegan) - because the less effort the better, right?

Appetizers:

Not Your Baba's Borscht (Vegan) - this is good for a light lunch or dinner too, and it's bright pink, so that's a thing.

Warm Bulgur and Lentil Salad (Vegan) - Again, good for lunch or even a light dinner. This is one of my favourites.

Entrees:

Moroccan Carrot and Chickpea Stew (Vegan) - spicy enough for your night! Ha? This looks nice and it'll fill you up without making you feel gross.

Savoury Pea Pancakes with Fresh Salsa (Gluten-free, Dairy-free) - This is more of a spring recipe, but I love it for a light dinner if you're serving something else as well, like soup. I think pancakes are really nice to make together too.

Desserts:

Raw Chocolate Mousse (vegan, gluten-free, nut-free) - my most recent recipe, especially for valentines. THREE MINUTES to make. Seriously.

Paleo Black Forest Cupcakes (gluten and grain-free, dairy-free) - these were for my sister's birthday, but they're awesome for valentine's too. Go for it.

Apple Streusel Cake (Dairy-free) - this baby does double duty as breakfast, too.

Happy Valentine's Day!
