Liebster Awards

January 28, 2015
Hey guys! Jess from Little Alice nominated me for the Liebster Award! Thanks, new friend! I was super excited. Someone I've never met is reading my blog (whaaat) and, never mind just reading it, thought to nominate it for a thing! So nice.
So the Liebster Award is this thing where bloggers nominate other bloggers to help other people find their blog (what a great explanation, eh?). Blogs that can be nominated have to have less than 200 followers. The goal is to discover new blogs that don't have a huge following and create some more community with other bloggers. I haven't been blogging for very long and this is the first I've heard of it. It's pretty cool, all right.

Here are the rules:

  • Link back to the person who nominated you
  • Answer all the questions they asked in their post
  • Nominate eleven more blogs you like
  • Ask eleven questions for your nominees to answer
  • Let all your nominees know either through their blog or social media

Here are my answers to the questions Jess asked:

1. What's the inspiration behind your blog title?
I feel like this is kind of self-explanatory, maybe. I occasionally eat eggs, and sometimes use them in the recipes I post on here. At first I thought about calling it something clean eating, but then thought, "Wait! What if I want to post a less healthy recipe?!" and I'm not sure if I like the whole concept of 'clean' food, you know? So that title was dropped pretty quick and changed to Occasionally Eggs.

2. If you had a pub, what would you name it and why?
Haha, this is a weird question. My boyfriend and his best bud have a funny band called Lodged Turd and the Toilet Hands (heads up, if you click that link, the recordings were done in Graham's living room, and I'm pretty sure the whole album was written and recorded in a couple of hours). They wrote a song a few years ago called Lightning Dog. It's 30 seconds of speedy goofballery. I think that'd be a really fun pub name, and the sign could have a lightning dog on it! Ooh, boy.

3. If you could live in another era, which would it be and why?
Uhh, probably the 1960s. Maybe the 1920s? For the music and the clothes. It'd be so cool to see musicians and bands I listen to all the time perform live. But I don't know, some pretty bad shit was happening during both those periods, too. Lotsa racism and sexism. Uncomfortable underpants. Were women even wearing underpants then? There's something in the back of my mind telling me no one wore underpants in either of those eras.

4. What would your superpower and superhero name be?
I would LOVE to be able to teleport. I have a lot of family in Europe, and I'm really close to them, so it'd be awesome to just be able to pop through time and space to go have coffee with my grandmother or something. My name would be Bender. Because I'd bend time and space. Get it? Futurama was a good show.

5. What are your top three restaurants/cafes?
Boon Burger in Winnipeg! They were the first all vegan burger place to open in Canada. Nosh in Saskatoon is good too. They focus a lot on local foods, which is great, especially in a small city like Saskatoon. Oh man, I don't eat out much. The city I live in doesn't have any good restaurants. I guess my third is Sandhatter Waldcafe. It's a tiny cafe in the tiny town my grandmother lives in, but their stuff is amazing.

6. You have a late night craving, what do you reach for?
Probably water. I can never decide what to eat late at night and always end up just drinking some water instead. Is that too boring to write? Sometimes I just have some natural peanut butter mixed with a bit of honey. Honestly, I end up going to bed hungry a lot of the time because I end up staying up really late and can't figure out what I want to eat.

7. Favourite thing to cook/bake/create?
BREAD. Yeasted bread is perhaps the most amazing that can come out of your kitchen. It's such a fascinating process that starts out with so few ingredients and expands into this incredible thing. It's science. You can see it rise and bake into something that's so completely different from what you started with. I love the smell of yeast doughs, I love the way they feel, I love how fresh and wonderful homemade bread is. I am absolutely content when baking bread.

8. Your favourite blog post of all time from your own blog?
My Pear and Almond Sweet Bread, obviously! I have a couple of bread recipes on here, but that one is definitely my favourite. Zopfbrot is so comforting to make, and it's kind of a fancy recipe.

9. You can meet and collab with one food blogger only, who would it be? Why?
Ha, I asked Graham for help with this one, and his answer was "if it happens, it happens. Whatever." I couldn't decide between a few blogs I read all the time. I think I'd have to go with Angela Liddon from Oh She Glows. Hers was the first food blog I found, a few years ago, and got me interested in really starting to alter my cooking and eating habits to be more healthy. I think I was already vegetarian when I came across it, but I was still baking with white flour, sugar, lots of butter and shit like that. She seems so nice, too. Maybe we'd be best friends. So now if I do ever meet her she'll think I'm a huge creep. Muahaha.
10. What's your favourite recipe from childhood?
Coconut bread. That's one my first blog posts, and I write a bit about why I love coconut bread so much. My very best friend when I was little was Trinidadian and her grandparents made coconut bread all the time. It reminds me of her. Otherwise, I was making a lot of meat-y kind of things when I was a kid, and I don't make them now. I think roast chicken was one of the first things I learned how to make.

11. What's your favourite thing about blogging?
I love how it forces me to be creative in the kitchen, even if that can be stressful at times. Sometimes I push myself too hard to be really creative and end up posting recipes that are too complicated for people to really want to make. Instead of just following recipes, or finding a recipe and then changing bits of it, I need to come up with my own now on a weekly basis. It's great to see what other bloggers are doing too, especially on instagram

I kind of get the feeling this started out kind of funny and then got more serious as I got sleepy. Sorry.

I'm not sure exactly how many followers my nominees have, but I'm sure none of them are really huge blogs (yet).

I nominate:
La Cucinella (in Italian, but gorgeous)
Ihana (in German)

My questions:
Who's your favourite artist? why?
If you could go into space, which planet would you visit, and why?
How did you come up with the name for your blog?
What's your dream kitchen like?
If you had to choose one thing to eat every day, what would it be?
What's your favourite colour combination?
What's your go-to cookbook?
Which genre of music or musician/artist do you always end up listening to?
How do you come up with the recipes for your blog?
What's your favourite hot drink?
aaaand what's the best thing you've ever made? or the best recipe you've posted on your blog?

I wanted to ask questions not related to food blogging at all, like what your favourite monkey is. Bonus question! What's your favourite primate? I like lemurs.

If you do write a post for the Liebster Awards, please let me know in the comments!
