A nice simple five ingredient smoothie, this apple banana smoothie is made without any expensive frozen berries or ‘superfood’ powders. It’s a good everyday snack and what we’ll often make in the winter months. Just a bit sweet – it’s sweetened only with the fruit – and with a good portion of nut butter, it’s nice and creamy.

Since no frozen ingredients are used, it’s a good smoothie to have in the colder weather because it’s not too cold to drink. For some more fruit-filled smoothies without any protein powders, try my banana avocado smoothie, summery nectarine smoothie, and blueberry peanut butter smoothie.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

  • Nut butter: use peanut butter for a stronger taste, or something like white almond or cashew butter if you’d like to taste more of the fruit.
  • Yogurt: any type of yogurt. I’ve been using Greek-style soya yogurt lately.
  • Milk: I always use oat milk, but any unsweetened milk can be used.
  • Add-ins: you can add 1-2 tablespoons oats to thicken it, or a sprinkle of cinnamon or vanilla to make it taste a bit sweeter.

Step by Step

Smoothie before and after blending.

Step 1: add all of the ingredients to a blender.

Step 2: mix on high speed until very smooth and serve immediately.

Recipe Notes

You must use a good, flavourful apple for this recipe or it will taste bland. Choose a good eating apple.

There is rarely a need to peel apples, and certainly not for this smoothie. You’ll get a few flecks of the peel showing in the drink but that’s not a bad thing.

Expert Tips

  • Use a ripe banana: the riper the banana, the sweeter the smoothie will be. It’ll add a stronger banana flavour, too.
  • Sweeten to taste: if you feel that the smoothie isn’t sweet enough with only fruit, add a soft date or two, or sweeten with some liquid sweetener like maple syrup or honey.
  • You’ll need a strong blender: apple is a little tricky to blend fully. Use a fairly strong standing blender or a high-powered immersion blender for the best results.
