Not too sweet and with a good melon flavour, this cantaloupe smoothie isn’t just fruit – hemp hearts and yogurt add some protein ( a whopping 17 grams per serving) without impacting the taste too much. You might know this melon as muskmelon or rockmelon, but true cantaloupe and American cantaloupe (muskmelon) are both excellent here.

This recipe is adapted from my nectarine smoothie.

Recipe Rundown: Cantaloupe Smoothie

  • Flavour: lightly sweet, like a creamy cantaloupe. You need to use a very ripe melon for the best taste.
  • Texture: smooth. If your blender isn’t very strong you might get some bits of hemp heart.
  • Difficulty: very easy. Scoop out the melon with a spoon, chuck it all in a blender, and mix.

Ingredients

Cantaloupe smoothie ingredients with labels.
  • Cantaloupe: try to choose a very ripe cantaloupe (in season). The sweeter and riper the better or you risk it not coming through very strongly in the smoothie.
  • Yogurt: use any yogurt type you like. A thick Greek-style yogurt will result in a thicker smoothie.
  • Hemp hearts: make sure you use hearts, and not seeds. If you don’t want to include them they can be omitted. Substitute something like cashew butter if you still want a little extra protein without overwhelming the melon flavour.
  • Honey: optional, depending on how sweet your melon is. Use maple syrup for a vegan option.
  • Optional add-ins: if you don’t mind a blend, you can add a ripe banana in place of any sweetener and reduce the amount of yogurt a bit. Orange juice can replace yogurt for a more tropical flavour and thinner, juicier smoothie.

Step 1: add all ingredients to a blender.

Step 2: blend until very smooth and serve.

How to Store

I’ve never tried keeping this refrigerated for any length of time, but it might do better when stored than a banana smoothie would. I think if you have leftovers the best thing to do is freeze into some kind of mould to make popsicles.

Expert Tips

  • Use ripe fruit: if you use an unripe melon, the smoothie will be bland. Cantaloupe melons smell very sweet when they’re fully ripe, so your nose will be your best tool in knowing when it’s ready to use. It will feel a little softer when ripe too but the scent is the best way to tell.
  • Sweeten to taste: should you need to sweeten the smoothie, I recommend a liquid sweetener like honey. Add after blending the other ingredients, after tasting to see if you need it.
