The title says this recipe has four ingredients, but it really has FIVE. If you count the water for almond milk as an ingredient, that is. You know those crazy unhealthy recipes floating around the internet that say "only two ingredients! amazing!" and then it's a white cake mix and cool whip? That's not two ingredients, guys, it's like a ka-gillion. Or when recipes say they're sugar-free but use a kilo of artificial sweetener. I'll get into the evils of fake sugar at a later date. I'm working on an article about natural sugars, why I use the ones I do, and how to replace refined sugar in recipes. Sweet.
This recipe was inspired by banana soft serve or "nice cream" as it's often called on social media. Since frozen bananas pretty much turn into ice cream when they're blended, I thought they'd make a pretty kick ass milkshake too. They totally do! I love milkshakes. This version uses bananas and dates for a natural thickening agent/sweetener. The extra neat thing is that they're both great healthy energy boosters and (bonus!) best buds with your belly. Dates are especially good for digestive health.
It serves two people, but if you don't feel like sharing that's cool. I had some as a pre-workout snack this morning and my sister drank the rest.
Makes two medium-sized shakes
2 cups nut milk*
2 frozen bananas
2-3 soft medjool dates
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Optional: freshly grated nutmeg for topping*
Toss everything into your blender and blend until smooth. I used a magic bullet and it didn't quite liquidize the dates, but it was still good. Drink it cold! You can keep it in the fridge for a day and just shake it before drinking.
1. I used a mix of cashew and almond, but it's extra tasty with 100% cashew milk.
2. The nutmeg just makes everything better. Fresh is always best, especially for spices! I got nutmeg in the shell and love it. I did crack a fingernail trying to open the shell though.
